Changes to the myGovID app

September 16, 2021

You may have noticed some changes to your myGovID app, following recent updates.

These changes include the option to verify your photo and set up Strong identity strength. If you choose to increase your identity strength to Strong, then you are increasing the security of your digital identity.

If you have automatic app updates set up for myGovID, you may notice a different screen that is prompting you to verify your photo and provide additional identity documents to achieve a Strong identity strength.

While these steps are optional, and only required if you wish to increase your identity strength to Strong, the ATO understands the inclusion of these steps did cause some confusion.

If you have a Standard identity strength and do not wish to increase your identity strength to Strong, you can continue accessing the ATO’s online services as usual. There are only a small number of services that require a Strong myGovID.

In coming weeks, a ‘prompted update’ of the myGovID app will be required for all devices and all users will have the opportunity to set up a Strong identity strength. You can also manually update your myGovID app in your app store to access these features sooner.

You can find out more about setting up a Strong myGovID at www.myGovID.gov.au/setup. If you need help email digitalidentity@ato.gov.au or call the myGovID support number on 1300 287 539
